In Summer 2016, Research Triangle MRSEC will begin an educational partnership with the Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network, an innovative hub for nanotechnology resources across NC State University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill. The RTNN is one of 16 sites in the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI), and is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The RTNN not only serves as a portal to physical resources in the Research Triangle, but also intellectual resources by leveraging the expertise of 100+ principal faculty and 45+ technical staff members across the 3 constituent universities and 9 core shared user facilities.
The goal of this partnership is to support Nanotechnology-related undergraduate education in the Triangle-area by leveraging the resources available to both of these centers. Research Triangle MRSEC will host a summer REU student sponsored by RTNN to participate in a nanotechnology-related research project. That student will participate in the full range of activities provided by the Research Triangle MRSEC, but will also participate in RTNN-specific programming prior to, during, and following their summer research. These activities will include a follow-on project in collaboration with a faculty member at their home institution to determine how they can complement an existing class through interactions with the RTNN in the year following their summer program.
